Thomas Maggio, age 94, of Rome, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2018.
He was born December 28, 1923, in Brooklyn, a son of the late John and Mary Orofino Maggio. Thomas was united in marriage to the former Jean Angela Rosati on October 31, 1959, in the Church of St. John the Baptist. He attended schools in Brooklyn and entered college in February 1942, at the College of the City of New York for a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was inducted into the Armed Forces in February 1943 and served in the Army Airways Communications System of the U.S. Army Air Force as a radio operator. He served in North Africa, Italy and Greece from December 1943 to November 1945, achieving the rank of Staff Sgt., and earned three battle stars and the good conduct medal. He was discharged from the Army in December 1945, and returned to college to finish his studies; graduating in February 1950 with a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering. He joined the Watson Laboratories, Red Bank, NJ in October 1950. He moved with the laboratory to Rome, in December 1950, where he was engaged in Research in Radar systems at the Rome Air Development Center (RADC), receiving the following awards, May 1961-Incentive Award-Phased Array Radar Development, April 1966-Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service (USAF), and August 1971-Accomplishment of the Year-High Resolution Imaging.
Tom was a life member of the Greenway-Verona Mills Fish and Game Club, a senior member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers). Among his many hobbies, were stamp collecting, coin collecting and photography. He also enjoyed fishing and target shooting.
Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Jean Maggio; his three daughters and sons in law, Melanie and Michael Fedele of Rochester, Mary Beth and Lee Sattler of Mt. Airy, MD, and Jeanette Fischer of Whitesboro; five grandchildren, Tanya and Roger, Alexander and Hayley and Alex; a great grandson, Domenic; sisters in law, Rita and Dolores and a brother in law, William Vullo; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother and sister in law, Frank and Betty.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 2:00 PM, at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 West Chestnut Street. Burial will be St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Friday 12 Noon to 2 PM, prior to the funeral service.
