Obituary of Sherman T. Pike

Sherman T. Pike, Jr., age 83, of the Town of Lee, passed away on April 12, 2018 at Rome Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Sherman was born in Newburyport, MA on January 22, 1935 to Sherman Sr. and Elizabeth Taylor Pike. On September 13, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, Anne Marie (Parks), in Shelburne Falls, MA. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a Bachelor's Degree in mechanical engineering and from New York University with a degree in meteorology. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, TX. After leaving the military, Sherman returned to the Northeast and began a civilian career at Griffiss Air Force Base that spanned 34 years. Sherman culminated his career leading the civil engineering organization. Sherman had a passion for the outdoors; snowmobiling through the winter months, enjoying sailing and motorboating on Lake Delta in the summer and hunting, fishing and golfing whenever the opportunity presented itself. Sherman contributed to the many organizations he participated in over his career; including serving as Commodore of the Lake Delta Yacht Club, President of the Board of Directors of AmeriCU Credit Union, communicant at St. Paul's Church and enjoyed Griffiss Ski Club road rallies and gourmet dinner club meetings. Sherman is survived by his loving wife, Anne Marie; three sons and daughters-in-law, James and Mary Pike of Rome, Steven and Liz Pike of Littleton, CO, and Robert and Beth Pike of Selkirk, NY; grandchildren, Sara Cronin, Kristen, Matthew, Ryan, Claire, and James Pike; three great grandchildren, Gabriel, Hunter, and Alexander; a sister and brother-in-law, Deborah and George Lambert of Shirley, MA; and a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Maureen Pike of Shelburne Falls, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 1 PM at St. Paul's Church, Rome, with the Rev. Robert L. Kelly officiating, followed by military honors. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at St. Paul's Church on Tuesday from 11 AM to 1 PM prior to the Funeral Mass. Arrangements are entrusted to the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street.
