Mary Gurley lived in a time when women in America were very limited in what they could become: Mothers; teachers; nurses; secretaries; etc. Even secretarial and nursing positions were held primarily by men before World War II. Mom always wanted to attend college and loved to read, but it was not encouraged for women and most people couldn't afford it. But she found that she could join the Navy during World War II and get some education and training that way and did. She served in the first class of Navy Waves and went to Washington, DC. There she worked on the Manhattan project with physicists and others in a temporary building on what is now the National Mall. She felt so great about her and other women serving the country during this time of war that she wrote to President and Mrs. Roosevelt to say how proud they were to serve. Not long after that, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt invited the Waves to tea at The White House, and Mom met the First Lady. Later on in life, Mom and Dad were both very interested in national and world current events and affairs and talked about the issues at the dinner table. The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite was a staple every evening. It was especially interesting during the 60s and 70s with the "generation gap" era, the Vietnam War, and the Civil Rights and Women's Liberation movement. Sometimes things were a little heated, but oh so fascinating! My mother always supported Democratic causes and liked to see intelligent women and men in leadership, including Hillary Clinton and she loved FDR and Harry Truman. She would have loved to see a woman become President in her lifetime and always encouraged her children to work and study smart and do well and good in the world.

Mom was the sunshine on a cloudy day and I will never forget her loving and kind ways with everyone she encountered. She always had my back and was a huge cheerleader for all of her children and really everyone she knew and loved. She wanted only peace and love for us and wanted us to follow the Golden Rule (Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you).
