I worked with Mary Lou at Rome ER from 1980-1984 on the evening shift, and it was a big mistake to put the two of us together. We were both too eager to lighten the mood of the place. One slow night I had the idea of climbing into a laundry hamper and having Mary Lou push me by the other RN on duty - Poppy Gruber- when she returned from dinner. I was going to jump up and scare Poppy, probably for no reason whatsoever. (I'm certain it was Mary Lou's idea, but I'm sure she'd blame me.) I climbed into the hamper and Mary Lou covered me with a couple sheets and the secretary called out Poppy was on her way down the hall. The hamper started moving slowly, then faster and faster and then it stopped. I leaped up, only to find myself outside on the loading dock, with the access door to the ER locked! I had to run all the way around the hospital to get back into the ER. Naturally, Mary Lou had a totally straight face when I got there and denied any part of the double cross.
This was just one of many memorable shifts we shared. Mary Lou was smart, ambitious, nonjudgmental and fun; it was a pleasure to work with someone who always had your back. Nursing lost one of the good guys.

Thank you my G-Mommy for sharing so much fun and laughter with me, my family, and friends. You could make any situation tolerable or maybe hilarious would be more appropriate. You could keep the straightest face while instigating or implementing a prank. Oh what times we had. I'm sure you will be welcomed by so many but just know they've been watching down on you, so you may have to be extra clever to get one up on them again. Aside from the laughter and smiles, you were always a helpful and generous person, I am blessed to have known you. Prayers and love to you and your family! Peace be with you all ❤️
