Grace R. Madonia, age 96, formerly of Bouck Street, Rome, passed away peacefully December 18, 2011, with her loving family at her side. She was born October 23, 1915, in Pittston, PA, a daughter of Rosario and Antonina Lipani Carletta, and educated in Rome schools. Grace was united in marriage to Isadore "Sal" Madonia, on April 15, 1939, in the Church of the St. John the Baptist; he died July 4, 1969. She was a member of the Church of St. John the Baptist, the Ava Dorfman Senior Center, the Happy Hoofers Dance group and various bocce teams. Grace had a tremendous love for her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved and enjoyed her friends and Bouck Street neighbors, especially the Vescio family. She was a lady of great faith and always attended Sunday Mass with her friend, Polly. Grace is survived by a daughter and son in law, Marie and Edward Hill of Point Rock; two sons and a daughter in law, Anthony Madonia and fiancée, Donna Marrocco of Rochester, and Sam and Carol Madonia of Rome; two former daughters in law: Kathy Maxim of Rochester and Diane Reali Munn of Virginia, a sister, Nina Pettinelli of Rome; a brother and sister in law, Angelo and Louise Carletta of Rome; sisters in law, Bridgett Carletta of Rome, Mary Carletta of Canastota, Olympia Carletta of Rome; Arlene Emma of Rome, Francis Salvaggio of Rome, Angelina Madonia of Rome and Pauline Madonia of Arizona, grandchildren, Nina and husband, Paul Sayre, Heidi and husband Stephen Rosinski, Theresa and Danielle Madonia, Tina and Justin Madonia and Samantha Sykes; and two great grandchildren Tessa Sayre and Marcus Walker; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by sisters and brothers in law, Mary and Abraham Joseph, Josephine and Francis Spring, Rose and Ronald Sander, Lillian and Tony LaGrieco, and a special brother in law, Leonard Pettinelli; brothers and sisters in law, Michael Carletta, Charles, Louis, Raymond and Salvatore Carletta and James and Sam Emma. Grace loved to crochet and enjoyed crocheting blankets for her children, grandchildren, family members and friends. She was a wonderful cook and everyone lined up in her kitchen every Sunday to enjoy her sauce and famous "fried meatballs". The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff and doctors at Rome Memorial Hospital Residential Care Facility, for their care, compassion and friendship extended to Grace, the past several years, and to Tony Cee for the many years of thoughtful and caring birthday cards and "lucky" lottery tickets. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11:00 AM, at the Church of St. John the Baptist. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of St. John the Baptist Memorial Fund.
