Obituary of Charlotte Marie Bowers

Please share a memory of Charlotte to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Charlotte Marie (Evans) Bowers, age 91, of the Town of Westmoreland, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2024, at the Eastern Star Home, surrounded by her loving family.

Charlotte was born in Westmoreland on June 19, 1933, to the late Llewllyn (Lynn) S. and Mary E. Evans. She graduated from Westmoreland Central School in the class of 1950, and the Excelsior Business School in 1951. On May 1, 1954, she was united in marriage to George F. Bowers, Jr. in the Westmoreland Methodist Church; a blessed union of nearly 66 years until his passing on March 2, 2020. The couple moved to Arlington, VA where he was stationed at Fort Myer in the 3rd Infantry Division Honor Guard. After his honorable discharge in 1955, they returned to the area and lived in Verona until 1959, when they moved to their current residence which they built on Eureka Road in Westmoreland.

Charlotte worked at First Bank and Trust Company of Utica, Arlington Trust Company of Arlington, VA, Homestead Savings and Loan Association of Rome, the Rome Cable Division of ALCOA, and she retired from the CNY DDSO in 1994. During the 1960’s, she worked as the Westmoreland Town Court Stenographer and later as the town bookkeeper. After her retirement, she frequently filled in as a legal secretary at her son’s office in which she joked that aside from the short notice, long commute, and inferior pay (a free lunch), she enjoyed it.

When her children were young, she was a Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout leader. She was a charter member of the Verona Firemen’s Auxiliary, the Westmoreland Historical Society, and the Westmoreland Community Recreation Association. She attended St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rome. She enjoyed cooking, baking, crossword puzzles, crocheting, feeding animals especially birds, and spending time with her cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her memory and recollection of the Town of Westmoreland history was impeccable, and she could tell you anything you needed to know.

Charlotte is survived by her daughters, Karen (Richard) O’Dell, and Kathy Scott; son, Keith (Wendy) Bowers Esq., grandchildren, Kristen Wilczek, Cassandra (Ken) Race, Zachary Esser, David Bowers M.D., Ryan Bowers, Alyssa Bowers, Michael (Catherine) Green, and Kendra Green; great grandchildren, Kyle, Kaylan, Charlotte, Caleb, Wyatt, and Adalynn. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Jack Schultz; brothers, Robert and Arvon Evans; and sister-in-law, Linda Evans.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at the Eastern Star Home for their care and compassion shown to Charlotte during her stay.

Charlotte’s funeral will be held on Thursday, at 11 AM, at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street. Burial will be in Westmoreland Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 PM on Wednesday.
