Obituary of Rose M. Mattia

Rose Marion (Leone) Mattia, age 98, of Rome, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2024 at Bethany Gardens.

She was born March 6, 1926, in Utica, a daughter of the late Joseph A. and Mary Romeo Leone and graduated from St. Francis de Sales School in Utica. Rose was united in marriage to Edward K. Mattia Sr. on September 21, 1946 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, in Utica; a blessed union of over 50 years until his passing on December 20, 1996. Rose was employed by Loomis Manufacturing for many years and later worked at Ferlo's Dan Dee Donuts in Rome, retiring after many years of service. She was a devoted communicant of St. Peter’s Church in Rome.

Rose was very dedicated to her family, faith, and community. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Altar Rosary Society, Legion of Mary, St. Peter’s Senior Citizens, Mission of the Christ Child, and Nocturnal Adoration. She was an active participant in St. Peter’s Church Religious Education Program, and Associate of the Sisters of Saint Joseph and the Teresians. She also volunteered for the American Cancer Society, Reach to Recovery, Relay for Life - Josie’s Girls, the Chatterbox Home Bureau and was a Senior Companion for the CNY DDSO.

Rose is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Joseph Nasci of Rome; son and daughter-in-law, Edward K. and Nancy Mattia Jr. of Rome; son in-law, Jerry and Beverly Coy of Lake Waccamaw, NC; sister, Anna Mezzanini of Utica, sisters-in-law, Christina Leone of Utica and Eleanor Leone of Utica; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; one step-great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter and son-in-law; Diane and Harry Kozma, a daughter; Barbara Coy; a granddaughter; Renee (Nasci) Gilmore; a sister and brother-in-law; Carmelina and Francis Ziobro Sr.; brothers and sisters-in-law; Frank and Mary Leone, John and Ann Leone, Michael and Elsie Leone; brothers, Anthony Leone and Robert Leone; and brother-in-law; Michael Mezzanini.

The family would like to thank the staff at Bethany Gardens for the care and compassion they gave to Rose.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday September 14, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Peter’s Church in Rome.  Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call at St. Peter’s Church on Saturday September 14, 2024 from 10 AM to 11 AM prior to the mass.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mission of the Christ Child at St. Peter’s Church.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street.
