Obituary of John W. Haley, Jr.
John W. Haley Jr., age 86, of Rome, New York, passed away on April 7, 2024, at Rome Health Residential Health Care Facility, surrounded by his family.
John was born in Rome on Oct. 26, 1937, to the late John and Sophie Wilk Haley, and graduated from St. Aloysius Academy. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1956-1960. He completed his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, and then went on to serve as an air policeman in the 47th Bombardment Wing, USAF, at the Royal Air Force Station at Sculthorpe, Norfolk, England. In the 47th Air Police Squadron, he was chosen to attend a special school for sentry dog handlers in England. He would go on to train canines and serve as a sentry with his canines, Karl and Max, guarding the vital Strategic Air Command base installations at Sculthorpe. He was honorably discharged. John was a New York State trooper, and later a machine operator at Revere Copper & Brass. He was a skilled craftsman, refinishing hardwood floors, which he learned from his father.
On Sept. 5, 1964, John was united in marriage to the former Patricia Lyndon, his wife of 60 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, for whom he reserved a special shelf for candy that the children looked forward to during their visits. John spent time fishing, boating, and hunting. He was a member of the Ukrainian Club and the White Front Camp Sportsman Club.
John is survived by his loving wife, Patricia; daughters, Susan (Ron) Smith of Verona, and Kathleen (James Kirk) Haley of Rome; sons, John (Maureen) Haley III of Clarence, New York, and Patrick (Malisa) Haley of South Riding, Virginia; grandchildren, Lydia, Luke, Joseph, Megan, Kiera, Brenna and Brogan; sisters, Barbara (Bill) Worth, and Josie Haley; brothers, Ronald (Kathleen) Haley, and Joseph (Becky) Haley; sister-in-law, Kathleen “Chip” (Robert) Haley; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, including his close cousins Ricky and Kory Davies. He was predeceased by his sisters, Jacqueline Moran and Carol Haley, and brother, Robert Haley.
The Haley family would like to thank the staff at the Rome Health Residential Health Care Facility for their kind and caring attention during John’s stay.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, at 11 AM, at St. Paul’s Church, 1807 Bedford St. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
