Obituary of Geoffrey Lawrence Straney
Geoffrey Lawrence Straney, age 68, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2023 at his home with family and friends by his side. He was a beautiful and generous soul and will be deeply missed.
Geoffrey was born September 11, 1955 in Rome, NY, the son of James and Patricia Straney. He grew up in Rome and was employed for many years at the Arc Oneida-Lewis County Arnold Avenue workshop in Utica.
A musically gifted child, Geoffrey enjoyed playing the piano when he was young. In later years, he liked dining out with family and friends, watching his favorite TV shows, and relaxing at home. He seldom turned down a “hot cup of decaf” during short trips around town to take in the sights.
“Uncle Geoff” had a special place in his heart for his many nieces and nephews, and never failed to recall the birthday of each and every one. He will forever be remembered for his bright smile, kind-hearted manner and winning personality. He touched the lives of all he met. He was especially sensitive to the challenges carried by others--always ready to offer a loving and reassuring word along with a gentle “love pat.” Geoffrey was of the Catholic faith.
Geoffrey is survived by his sisters, Anne Marie Straney, Cathleen Woodul, Joan Turri, Lauri Straney, Mary Straney, and Patricia Keegan; his brothers, Charles (Amanda) Straney, Daniel (Bethany) Straney, and Paul (Mona) Straney; and his large extended family, including many dearly loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends as well as his very special aunt, Nancy Celine Kerin. He was predeceased by his beloved parents and his older brother, James Patrick Straney.
The family offers heartfelt thanks to Geoffrey’s caregivers and friends at Central NY DDSO, whose skilled care, guidance and support enabled Geoffrey to grow, work and live a full and loving life. A special thank you is also extended to the caring support staff of Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 27th at 11 AM at St. Peter’s Church, Rome, with Rev. Sean P. O’Brien officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
