I recall with great fondness my time with Art as a young lifeguard at Delta Lake. I was a freshman guard in 1974 and Art was the “Old Salt” who helped me learn the etiquette of conducting our duties as masters of all we could see. He had a sharp wit, and the ability to talk to a brick wall and get answers back. Why is it that we don’t know that we are enjoying the good old days until they are long past? Joe Messineo

Art, Thank you for being a special part of Erwin's summit of Mt. Everest. Your knowledge and research helped me during a time that many could not relate to. I truly enjoyed learning from you, and while my husband was out there doing the most incredible expedition of his life, and I had worn out many folks supporting me during the days he was on the mountain, you graciously gave me your time and words of wisdom. I was worried beyond belief, and you reminded me to truly be grateful. When I was bothered that he was on the summit for so long, you responded with what an incredible day he had; you showed me the sunshine of the day vs the fears I had. There were many days I struggled due to the shear length of the expedition but knowing you were following day after day, along with many of our friends, it gave me the strength I needed. Ad astra per aspera was Erwin's motto of making it to the top of highest mountain in the world, you had your own hardships to the stars but one thing is for sure, the love and strength you have shared to your community and to my family will forever be remembered. Thank you for being a special part of Erwin's expedition and summit of Mt. Everest, the 35th Dutch National to ever climb it! Bly and I began sharing school psychologist duties in Canastota, NY, in the early part of 1994. We enjoyed and felt fulfilled by our work with children and adolescents, but we dealt with problems, had too much to do, and were constantly behind in doing evaluations. Leroy loved that job, his work at Hamilton, and life in general. I was awed by his zest and great mood. So it was easy to begin a personal friendship with Bly playing golf, skiing, attending concerts, going to conferences, and generally hanging out together for the past three decades. I will surely attend the upcoming celebration of his life -- he deserves it! Jim Wallace
