Obituary of John M. Stark
John “Fluff” M. Stark, age 55, of the Town of Floyd, passed away peacefully at home on August 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
John was born in New Hartford, NY to the late Arthur and Beverly Serviss Stark, and graduated from Holland Patent High School in 1986. On January 6, 1990, he was united in marriage to the former Mary Stooks. John was currently serving as the Fire Chief for the Floyd Volunteer Fire Department.
John was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, the NYS Association of Fire Chiefs, and had been a member of the Floyd Fire Department for over 30 years.
John is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his daughter, Samantha (Brandon) Hough of Floyd; his son, John (Paige) Stark of Rome; his grandchildren, Levi and Cecelia Stark; his sister, Marion Stark; his brothers, Arthur (Roberta Owen) Stark, Jr., and Russell (Renee) Stark; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful K-9 companions, Chief and Katie. He was predeceased by his other K-9 companions, Thor, Gertie, and Apollo.
John’s funeral will be held on Friday, September 1, at 11 AM at the Floyd Volunteer Fire Department, 8367 Old Floyd Road, Rome. Burial will be in Floyd Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Relatives and friends may call at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on Thursday from 3 to 7 PM. Members of the Floyd Fire Department will gather for a walkthrough at 6:30 PM and any other departments are welcome to join them at that time.
