Obituary of Dorothea Ann Iselo

Please share a memory of Dorothea to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dorothea Ann Iselo, age 66, of the Town of Floyd, passed away peacefully at home on July 18, 2023, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Dorothea was born in Rome on August 21, 1956 to the late John and Dorothy Francescone Ferlo, and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1973. On October 22, 1988, she was united in marriage to Paul V. Iselo, at the Church of St. John the Baptist. Dorothea began her working career as the front-end manager at Price Chopper. She retired from the Rome City School District as a PC specialist and at the time was working in Staley Elementary School.

Dorothea was a devout catholic and was a member of St. Peter’s Church. She taught religious education and volunteered in the rectory. Many Sundays were spent going to church, followed by breakfast, and then spending time with her Francescone cousins in what became known as “Sambuca Sunday.” She loved hosting holiday gatherings, entertaining on her back deck during the summer months with a large glass of wine, going to Colgate football games, floating in her pool, taking car rides with Paul to find out of the way taverns, and assorted pies and pastries.

Dorothea is survived by her husband, Paul; her daughter, Danielle (DJ Tennant) Wyman of Rome; her sons, Nicholas (Debra) Iselo of Ilion, and SSgt John (Maria Apfelbach) Iselo of Floyd; her grandchildren, Heylee (Sean) Jackson, Anthony Hoffmeister, Hayden Dooley, and Luca “Luca Buca” Iselo; her sister, Deborah (Glenn) Hand; her brother, Robert (Nancy) Ferlo; her sisters in law, Diane Ferlo and Mary Beth Ferlo; her brothers in law, Richard Galluppi, and Peter (Christine) Iselo; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, especially her niece, Tracey, and cousin/walking partner, Vaune, who were like her sisters, her nephews, Sebastian and Sam who were like sons, her “special” cousin, David Gualtieri, her bible study girls, and her TOPS girls: Vaune, Kelly, Laurie, Cuca, and Tracey. She was predeceased by her sister, Frances Galluppi; and her brothers, John “Skip” Ferlo, and Theodore “Ted” Ferlo.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Sikder, Dr. Liesveld, Dr. Khadim, Hospice, the nurses, and staff of the Slocum-Dickson Oncology Department, the 6th floors and infusion units at both MVHS and Strong Memorial Hospital, for their care, compassion, and support.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 28, at 11 AM at St. Peter’s Church, with Rev. Sean P. O’Brien officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on Thursday from 3 to 7 PM.
