Obituary of Mary P. Wojtus
Mary P. Wojtus, age 92 of Rome, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2023, at St. Joseph’s Health Hospital in Syracuse after a brief illness.
She was born January 24, 1931, in Rome a daughter of the late Onufry and Celia Glinka Pasternak. She was a graduate of Transfiguration School, Rome Free Academy and Utica School of Commerce.
Mary was united in marriage to Emil J. Wojtus who was a member of the US Navy on June 30, 1951, in the Church of the Transfiguration. He remained the love of her life for the duration of their 48 year marriage until he passed in 1999. She and Joe built a house on land adjoining her parents, and they took great pleasure in maintaining their gardens and landscaping surrounding their home. They enjoyed polka dancing, summers in Atlantic City and Lake George
Mary had a varied employment history. She first worked for the Rome Savings Bank and worked for the CNYDSO in Rome, retiring 30 years ago.
She was a member of the Church of the Transfiguration. Former member of the United Polka League and the Rome Polish Home.
In her later years She turned her attention to her flowers and observing and caring for the wildlife that surrounded her and feeding the birds in winter and taking in stray cats that found their way to her door. She also delighted in the deer, foxes, rabbits, raccoons, skunks that frequented her yard.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Elaine Wojtus former teacher and artist of Watkins Glen, and Sharon Wojtus of Rome; a special friend, John Vagnoni; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio, will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM, at the Church of the Transfiguration. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM.
