Obituary of Frances F. Smith

Please share a memory of Frances to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Frances F. Smith of Lee Center, NY, 86, known to her friends as “Frankie” or “Fay” passed away peacefully at home on April 5th, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She is predeceased by her parents George and Frances (Fairbrother) Wagner, her brothers Allan and William West, and her loving husband of 34 years, DeWitt “Smitty” Smith, who passed in 2010.

Frances was born on May 29th, 1936 in Pontiac, Michigan and grew up in Farwell, Michigan, spending all of her time outdoors; catching turtles and getting into mischief with her lifelong best friend Clara. She went on to work as a nurse’s aid for many years, was an active volleyball player, and was very passionate about swimming.

During her later years, Frances found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren. She felt a deep sense of pride in being called Grandma and made it her mission to shower her grandkids with hugs and endless love. Frances would take them out for lunch dates, movies, sing to them, beat them in card games, and sewed clothing and Halloween costumes with love in every stitch for them.

Frances was known for her kind heart, generous spirit, and great sense of humor. She had a gift for making people feel at ease and always had a listening ear for anyone who needed it. She had an avid passion for drawing and painting, baking, reading, sewing, and had an amazing green thumb; taking great pride in her bleeding heart blossoms and plants.

She spent the last several years of her life living with her daughter, Shara and son-in-law Erin, and their children surrounded by love. Frances had a special spot in her heart for her granddaughter Sidney, who devoted all her love and time into helping care for her over the last few years.

Frances was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, who dedicated her life to caring for her family. Frances is survived by her 5 children: Shara Barber and Erin Adsit, Steve and Kathy Barber, Bryan and Sue Barber, Keith and Rita Barber, Randy and Susan Barber, as well as 28 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren that she loved and adored. She will live on in each of us and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Relatives and friends may call at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on Sunday from 2 to 4 PM.  Burial will be in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on Monday at 11:30 AM
