Mary Lou Walter, age 78, formerly of Waterville, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2023, at the Katherine Luther Home in Kirkland, NY.

Mary Lou was born in Utica on December 13, 1944, to the late Homer and Lillian Reed Hopkins, and graduated from Clinton High School. On November 12, 1966, she was united in marriage to William “Bill” Walter, Jr. She worked as a therapy aide for over 37 years at the Katherine Luther Home.

Mary Lou loved nature and all its beauty. She liked to garden and was a member of the garden club in Waterville. She would also feed the occasional chipmunk or squirrel that would pass by her home. She volunteered at St. Bernard’s Church in Waterville for several years, and enjoyed going to music concerts with Bill.

Mary Lou is survived by her loving husband, Bill; her sons, William (Kimberly) Walter III of Gordonsville, TN, Jerry Walter of Clinton, Daniel Walter of Utica, and David Walter of Waterville; three grandchildren, Sky, Aiden, and Julian; two sisters, Linda Merritt, and Susan (Bill) Braun; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 2, at 4 PM, at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, Rome.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 PM prior to the funeral.
