Obituary of Raymond E. Snell, Sr.
Raymond E. Snell, Sr., age 86, of Rome, NY, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2023, at The Grand of Rome.
Raymond was born in Gloversville, NY on March 17, 1936 to the late William H. and Elsie Kniskern Snell, Sr. As the only Deaf child in his family, Raymond attended Malone School for the Deaf, Rochester School for the Deaf, and then Rome School for the Deaf (NYSSD). On September 2, 1972, he was united in marriage to Carol Brehm. They were fortunate to celebrate 50 years of marriage together.
Until his retirement, Raymond supported his family as a leather tanner at Simco Leather in Johnstown, NY.
Raymond loved hunting, fishing, and nature in general. Building his house in Bleecker, surrounded by the beauty of the Adirondacks, he shared that love with family and friends. During his free time, he loved working in his workshop, taking broken pieces of furniture and making them whole. He had a sense of humor that he passed on to his family and used in teasing his friends. A wonderful example of “Deaf can”, Raymond proved he was just as capable as anyone else, he just couldn’t hear. He also had a confident faith in God and shared Jesus with everyone.
Raymond is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his daughter, Laura (Adam) Moritz of TN; his son, Raymond (Kara) Snell, Jr. of Rome; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara (Jack) Foreman, and Carol Gill; a sister-in-law, Caroline Snell; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Donna Snell; and a brother, William Snell.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 28, at 12 Noon, at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, Rome, NY.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 10 AM to 12 Noon prior to the service.
