Obituary of Elizabeth M. Monroe
Elizabeth M. Monroe, age 83, of Rome, passed away suddenly and peacefully on September 27, 2022.
She was born August 10, 1939, in West Turin, NY, a daughter of the late Ernest and Mary Sebastian Ward. Elizabeth was united in marriage to Charles W. Monroe, Sr. on June 8, 1963, a marriage of more than 55 years; he died November 26, 2018. She worked as a claims representative for the Social Security Administration and retired after 30 years of service, and later worked and retired from the CNYDSO in Rome. She also was an active member of St. Paul’s Church.
Liz had many interests, but none more than her devotion to her husband, family, friends and the many people she crossed paths with over the years. She was a selfless person, always, always putting family and friends ahead of herself. An animal lover, she always had special place in her heart for her many pets and wildlife visitors over the years. She especially enjoyed her pursuit of riches, making many donations to the NYS lottery commission and numerous bingo halls over the years. She also enjoyed depleting the stock of blueberries and strawberries from the bushes of the local berry patches and sharing them with others.
Liz is survived by her children, Gary (Kathy) USMC (RET) of Newport, NC; Douglas, USMC (RET) of Las Vegas, NV; Charles II, USMC (RET) of Myrtle Beach, SC; and Laurie (Justin) Cresswell of Rome; a sister, Phyllis Muha of Constableville; grandchildren Justin (Hayley) Monroe, Christopher Monroe, Jennifer (Michael) Zakaras, Kelsi Monroe, Matthew Monroe, Victor (Niki) Smith, Elizabeth Bender, Carolyn Monroe, and Tony Monroe; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she is predecessed by her sisters: Gertrude Trichilo, Florence Stianoff, Genevive Talarczyk, Regina Higby, Lucile Swiernik, Stella Kornatowski, and brothers Leon, Carl, Henry and Eugene Ward.
Funeral services will be private. Entombment will be in Holy Trinity Mausoleum.
