Obituary of Beverly E. Makarchuk

Beverly “Betty” Makarchuk, age 93, of Rome, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2022, peacefully at her home.

Betty was born on October 4, 1928, to the late Neil and Lena Guilds, in Oswego, NY.  After she graduated from Oswego High School, she went on to study Education at SUNY Oswego. Beverly retired from the Rome Public Schools as a teacher of Special Education at Rome Free Academy. She married her college sweetheart, Joseph Nero, who passed away in 1963. She then married Harry Makarchuk, who passed away in 2003.

Betty was active in Mid-York and Heritage Doll Clubs, which she greatly enjoyed. She was a lover of music and the arts and sang like an angel.

In addition to her husbands, Betty was predeceased by a son, Michael Nero; three brothers; and one sister. She is survived by two daughters, Belinda (Jai) Florada and Julie (Jim) Grogan; a son, Scott (Jane) Makarchuk; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Betty’s wishes, her body will be donated to SUNY Medical University for research and educational purposes.

A private service will be held for family at a later date.  Donations in Betty’s name may be made to The Special Olympics or charity of your choice.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street.
