Julie Pangbourne, 78, of Rome, NY, peacefully passed away on May 13th surrounded by her loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer.

Julie Mae Gentile was born on May 26th, 1943, to Marion and Vincent J. Gentile of Rome, New York. She graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1961 and did course work at the State University of New York Geneseo and Utica College. She held long term positions at Mohawk Airlines, Denti Elementary School, and became an essential part of the research and development team at the US Airforce Science and Technology Program known as the Rome Laboratory. After twenty-five years of service, she retired in 2014 with military honors. Always an active member of the community, she was on the board of St. Joseph’s Church and member of the Lee Center Senior Citizens, Lee Legion Auxiliary, Lake Delta Club Yacht Club, St. Joseph’s Church Choir, Rome Twigs, Rome Columbiette’s and Rome Jayncees.

In 1964, she married her high school sweetheart David Pangbourne at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, a blessed union for 57 years. She is survived by her husband, brother in-law Harvey and wife Leonor, two children Scott Pangbourne and his wife Grace, Shelley Land and her husband David, grandchildren Kenneth, Caroline Mae, Meghan, Rachel, step-grandchildren Chelsea and Casey and great-grandchildren Abel, Lincoln, and Charlotte. She was predeceased by her parents and brother Vincent P. Gentile.

Julie’s greatest treasure was her family. It was apparent to everyone that she came alive when with her family and while entertaining. She loved the house to be filled with joy, laughter and conversation: embracing every opportunity to be together as a family. Anyone who was lucky enough to meet her could never fail to feel the love and compassion beaming from her smile.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, May 19th, 2022, at 10 AM, at St Joseph’s Church in Lee Center with Father Benard Menard officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 5-7 PM at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 West Chestnut Street, Rome, New York.

The family sincerely thanks the staff of the Upstate Cancer Center in Oneida for their care, commitment, and compassion.
