Obituary of Frederick S. Barnes

CMSGT (ret) Frederick Barnes stood his final earthly formation and passed away at Rome Memorial Hospital at age 86 on December 18, 2013. Fred was born in Buffalo, New York to Canadian parents and had dual citizenship. Shortly thereafter, his family moved back to St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Although his brother was in the Canadian Army, Fred decided to enlist in the American Army. After training, he was sent to the Philippines. When WWII ended, Fred transferred to the United States Air Force and served on active duty for a total of 34 years. During that time, Fred was stationed in Greenland, Germany and Italy as well as Fort Slocum, Edwards AFB, Langley AFB and Griffiss AFB. During the course of his career, Fred received numerous awards including the Pacific Theater, Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. When asked about his military service Fred said: "When I retired, after 34 years, I never regretted any of it and still look fondly on the entire time." After retiring from the service, Fred went to work for the Oneida County Veterans Service Office and the Office for the Aging. Fred was extremely active in veteran's organizations including the American Legion, The VFW, the Air Force Chiefs and the B-52 Foundation. Fred was also very proud his involvement with the First Presbyterian Church and was always quick to volunteer for the many activities and fund-raisers they hosted. Fred was predeceased by his wife, Iris, his brother Jim, and his sister Janet, He is survived by his sisters Marion Barnes and Rose Kane and Brother-law Nick Petry. He is also survived by his three children the Hon. Joan (Dr. Albert) Shkane, Alexander (Michele) Barnes and Catherine Barnes; and his six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind to cherish his memory, many friends at the First Presbyterian Church of Rome and his special love Marleah Gillander. The family would like thank the staff and nurses at Rome Memorial Hospital, The Terrace at Woodland, and Bethany Gardens, thanking especially Dr. Potluri, Dr. Matthew, and Dr. Joel Amidon. No man ever loved his country or his family more, or served them better. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church with full military honors. Burial will be in the spring. Relatives and friends may call at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on Thursday, from 4 to 7 PM.
