Hans Ogg, age 76, passed away at Crouse-Irving Hospital on November 24, 2013 after a brief bout with leukemia. Hans was born on June 10, 1937 in Islikon, Switzerland to the late Hans and Alice Fueg Ogg. He attended school in Switzerland and came to the United States in 1958. He served the U.S. Army as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division from 1961-1963. On March 21, 1964, he married the former Mary Draper at the Trinity United Church in Rome. Hans worked as a welder of Kynex Corp. on Mill Street in Rome and later, was an owner and operator of Ogg Tube Welding. Hans had been an active member of the Central New York All Airborne Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association. As an active duty airborne trooper, he served with the 1/503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) of the 82nd Airborne Division. He was also a member of the Frank J. Steczko Post PAV of Rome, and a member of the Sylvan Beach American Legion Post #1153. Hans took great pride in marching in the Rome Honor America Days Parade for several years, and participated in a number of community veteran activities such as the Rome and Verona NY Memorial Day and Veterans' Day events. Hans is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary; a son and daughter in law, Samuel and Betty Ogg of Hollister, NC; two grandsons, David Ogg and Joseph (Katelyn) Ogg; a great granddaughter, Mara Ogg; two step-grandchildren, Robin Wissinger, Kathy (Michael) Downing; five step-great grandchildren, Randal Lockwood, Tyler and Sam Wissinger and Hunter and Kyle Downing; and a sister, Hanny Buchegger of Switzerland. He was predeceased by a great granddaughter, Rachel Ogg, a step grandson, Greg Wissinger, and a sister, Georgette Letiner. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 30 at 6 PM at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street. Burial will be held in the spring at Rome Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 6 PM, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
