Obituary of Jean M. Johnson
Jean M. “GG” Johnson, age 95, of Rome, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2019, at Rome Memorial Hospital.
Jean was born in Oriskany on April 23, 1924 to the late James and Mary Grace Phillips, and graduated from Oriskany High School. On August 23, 1947, Jean was united in marriage to Carleton E. “Brud” Johnson; a blessed union of 61 years until his passing in 2008. Jean worked in the cafeteria at Rome Catholic High School for 25 years and then worked as a clerk for the Oneida County Health Department for 20 years, retiring at the young age of 87.
In the 60’s, Jean and Brud opened their home to children from Cuba, the four Ramirez children and the two Fernandez teenagers. Jean looked forward to going out to dinner on Friday nights with her girlfriends, Thursdays with Renee, whom she would say was the best hairdresser ever, and the once a month coffee date with her longtime friends. She also loved Sunday family dinners at her daughter’s house with her small but loving family.
Jean leaves behind her daughter, Jacqueline (Patrick III) St. Thomas; a grandson, Matthew Makuch; a great grandson, Ethan Makuch, all of Rome; a special niece, Barbara Phillips Sherman of TX who Jean raised; two granddaughters; and many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Jerry; her sister, Bernice Slaga; and a twin brother, James.
The family would like to thank Judy Ernenwein, who was like a second daughter to Jean, for her care, compassion and friendship throughout the years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro.
Relatives and friends may call at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on Friday from 4 to 7 PM.
