Obituary of Richard Perle Countryman

Richard P. Countryman, age 80, of the Town of Lee, passed away December 9, 2012, after a long illness. He was born May 6, 1932, in Prospect, the son of the late Perle and Ida Salmon Countryman, and educated in Holland Patent schools. Richard was united in marriage to the former Marilyn Wendt, on February 12, 1955, in St, Peter's Lutheran Church in Churchville. He worked as an electronics technician at RADC at Griffiss Air Force Base, retiring after many years of service. He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served as an Elder, Trustee and longtime dedicated volunteer. He also was Past Master of the Remsen Masonic Lodge. Richard proudly served in the USAF during the Korean War, and received the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonita and Robert Katsur of Wasilla, AK, and Sheila and Donald Thompson of Solvang, CA; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Wayne Countryman of Baltimore, MD, and Gregg and Mary Countryman of Indian Trail, NC; a sister and brother in law, Ruth and William VanDyke of Vestal, NY; grandchildren, Peter Katsur, Jennifer Barnes, Rachel Katsur and Joshua Katsur, Erik Thompson, Kyle Countryman and Emma Countryman. He was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Plumley, and a grandson, Matthew Katsur. The funeral service will be held Friday at 11:00 AM, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Rome Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, Thursday 3:30 to 5:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the Wounded Warrior Project.
