I have many beautiful memories of our time together and only wish we could have had more. In my early years I was charmed by my dad's youngest brother. To me my Uncle Bill was the stuff heros were made of...handsome, dynamic, engaging, adventuresome, charming, exciting, daring and strong. He flew his own private airplane, braved big game hunting trips and dangerous safaris, drove fast boats and snowmobiles, traveled the world and was a successful businessman. I had stars in my eyes for him. I spent several weeks in the summer with Bill and Shirley in their trailer up near Old Forge where they taught me to water ski and how to drive boats and spoiled me rotten. Uncle Bill told the best scary ghost stories sitting at the campfire! Those are wonderful childhood memories for me. And through the years he was quick to stop everything in his busy schedule to come to my rescue. I had 2 big white ducks and a fox was sneaking around trying to get a meal! Uncle Bill came to our back yard with a horrendous recording of a dying rabbit and hunted the fox. It was quite a successful operation and my ducks and I were grateful. When I was in college, he flew to Boston when he heard I had been injured. He never waited if he thought I needed saving...he just showed up. Through the years I visited Bill and Shirley at their house in Florida where they treated me like a daughter and the three of us shared wonderful good times together. Uncle Bill would take me out to lunch for fried oysters or to Dixie Crossing for rock shrimp (yum). He would make popcorn and sit next to me on the couch holding my hand while we watched tapes of All in the Family together. He was like a second dad and was very attentive in our conversations that often drifted into the night. He confided his secrets and I told him mine. He taught me how to load shells for skeet shooting and drove me around the neighborhood on his golf cart. We shared wonderful memories with Aunt Shirley. I loved them both so much, but you know how it is...life gets in the way. In Rome I might not see them for months, and then they would show up in our driveway inviting my husband Al and me to go out for a drive or to get an ice cream cone. I loved to cook a meal for them or bake them a pie, because they were so thrilled and appreciative. They were always there in the wallpaper of my life. There were challenging circumstances that separated us at times, but I carry cherished memories of Uncle Bill in my heart and soul forever.

My fondest memories of Uncle Bill, are from when I was a small child. Everyday; on my way home from school, he would be standing at the Varflex door, and I would run as fast as I could, and jump into his arms.
He seemed so tall, and his hugs were so tight. I always knew he would catch me and I would get that bear hug! He laughed like a child and always watched for me at the door.
It's a simple, stupid thing. But in adulthood, there aren't many days that pass that I don't think of the feeling of safety, comfort and childlike joy he contributed to my growing.
I am very proud of my family. I am proud that he served in WWII, and the job he did during his service. A man of integrity and pillar in the community, I feel it is truly the end of an era.
My sincere condolences to those who loved and worked with him daily.
