Obituary of Rose Winfrey
Rose Elizabeth Winfrey, age 95, the last of a dozen siblings, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2019, at her home under the care of her loving family.
She was born May 2, 1924, in Rome, the 11th child of the late Dominick and Anna LaCroce Mosca. Rose attended Rome schools, worked in the onion fields in her youth, local factories during WW II, The Victory Supermarket meat department and retired as a lunch lady from the Rome Free Academy cafeteria.
Rose was united in marriage on October 30, 1946, at the Church of St. John the Baptist, to Walter M. Winfrey, a NAVY man, and lived in many interesting places, including, Guam, Saipan, Inyokern, CA, Long Beach, CA, Alameda, CA and Quonset Pt. RI, finally settling in Rome. She enjoyed needlework, loved to bake and give away Italian Christmas cookies, was a bingo aficionado, and most of all, spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Paul’s Church.
Rose is survived by a daughter, Wanona Carey of the Town of Lee; a son, Peter D. Winfrey of Rome; a granddaughter, Chiane (Christopher) Robbins of Oceanside, CA, a grandson, Peter M. Winfrey of Chandler, AZ; a great granddaughter, Madison Rose Robbins; and many special nieces and nephews.
Rose was predeceased by her husband, Walter, on September 14, 2011; her son in law, Ambrose F. Carey, Jr., on April 29, 1993. She also was predeceased by sisters and brothers in law, Jenne (Anthony) Mosca, Carmella (Casimir) Samsel, Angeline (Frederick Sr.) Hanba, Nicolena (Dominick) Manca, Virginia Pinti, a special niece, Mary Anne Croteau; her Mosca brothers and sisters in law, Joseph (Trixie), Anthony (Margaret), Frank (Tillie), John (Judy), Louis (Anna) and Samuel (Millie) and her sister in law, Mary Frances LaRosa, and brother in law William Winfrey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Church. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at Barry Funeral Home, Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM.
