Gary Northrup Gary J. Northrup, age 71, of Rome, passed away at Rome Memorial Hospital, October 15, 2012 after a short illness, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born March 11, 1941, in Rome, a son of William T. and Anna Mykyten Northrup. He was a 1959 graduate of Rome Free Academy. Shortly after graduation he joined the Merchant Marines and was employed by New York State and the Great Lakes working on the barges on the canal. Later was employed as an oil barge captain in the Gulf of Mexico, the Panama Canal and along both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. He retired in 2000. Gary has an extensive knowledge and interest in sports and history and loved animal and working around his home. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and companion. Gary is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Wendy (David) Lerman of Sylvan Beach and Susan Fort of Vernon Center; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul (Crystal) Northrup of Stittville; a brother William T. Northrup, Jr. of Malden, MA; two grandchildren, Brittany and Brandon Fort of Vernon Center and his companion Marcia K. Murphy. A graveside service will be held Friday at 2:00 PM at Rome Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution in Gary's name to The Human Society of Rome or the Rome Hospital Foundation. The family greatly appreciates the efforts of the Lake Delta Fire Dept., Rome Hospital E.D., and Dr. Thomas Mathew and his staff.
