Neil E. Waite, SMSGT Ret. USAF, age 79, of Rome, passed away, Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at Rome Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was born April 22, 1931, in Brattleboro, VT, a son of the late Millard, Sr., and Mabel Young Waite. He was a 1949 graduate of Brattleboro High School. Neil served 20 years in the USAF, retiring in 1971. He also worked at Hubbard Ind., in Wampsville for 19 years, and for a time at Montgomery Wards and Radio Shack. Neil met his wife, Dorothy (Dottie) Trager, while they both were stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. They were married on October 31, 1956, at the First Baptist Church in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. Neil bowled for many years in the Rome Bowling Association and was the Secretary/Treasurer for a number of leagues. He coached Junior Bowling for several years and was a member of the Rome Bowling Hall of Fame. Neil is survived by his wife, Dottie; two sons and a daughter and their families, Lonnie and his wife, Ann, and their children, Neil and Hillary of Ashland, MA, David and his wife Jeanne, and their children, Michelle and David of Rome, and Debbie and Sidney Canning and their children, Tim and Crystal of Charlotte, NC. Also surviving, are two brothers, Keith and his wife, Sonya, Millard Jr and his wife, Joan, and a sister, Marilyn Grassi and husband Richard; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson, Christopher, who died as an infant, and a sister, Jean Johnson. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. DiMarco and all the staff at Rome Memorial Hospital, who cared for Neil during his stays at the hospital. Funeral services will be private.
