Bernie had two brothers and two sisters. Alfred was the oldest, bernie in the middle and Larry. There were also two sisters,Gertrude the youngest and Joanita. Sadly they have all passed except me, Joanita. For whatever reason our names were not included in the obituary, but my brothers and sister were a very close and loving family. Berniie and I were the last ones left and as sick as he was and as difficult as it was for him to speak, he managed to call me often to tell me he loved. I miss him more than I can say. Thanks for spoiling me and being the best big brother ever. Love, joanita

Was stationed at the Griff. from 84-88 in the Civil Engineering Sqdrn. Bernie was a staple in that squadron, always willing to help out regardless of who you were or what was needed. A very special man who made a big impact on all of our lives, he is fondly remembered and missed.I remember his Retirement party well, what a happy day he surely had a hard time retiring. My thoughts and prayer go out to the Family of this American hero, my sadness at hearing his passing will be replaced over time with the fond memories of Bernie and his friendly personality.

With Bernie's passing, we grieve the loss of an honorable man who leaves a legacy of selfless and dedicated service and patriotism. As a member of our nation's "greatest generation" Bernie served the nation he loved with distinction during world war II. But Bernie's true service to our nation came in the form of what he did out of uniform for his family, friends and his community. A man of true humility with a spirit of generousity, Bernie's thoughts were always of others above self. The many "little things" that Bernie did thoughtout his life to bring joy to, and ease the pain of, others truly define the legacy of honor and selflessness that this great man leaves behind for all of us to emulate. Old Soldiers never die, their legacy lives on through all of us. I salute you Bernie, and trust that you will always watch over us from your place on the ultimate "high ground". May God Bless the Hohen family - you have so much to be proud of. Colonel Peggy Combs, United States Army

When I met bernie for the first time I was impressed. He was very down to earth type of guy,he talked about his WW2 experiences with humility,he was in some tight situations, gravely wounded and yet made it sound like just a days work.I was fascinated by his stories, but he was very compassionate about those who were the real hero's,the men and women who gave their ultimate sacrifice.Bernie will be missed. Sincerely,Eric F. Bowen
