Obituary of John E. Olmstead

John “Jack” E. Olmstead, age 92, of the Town of Lee, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2024, at Rome Health.

Jack was born in Olean, NY on June 28, 1931 to the late Everett and Alice Coles Olmstead. He was united in marriage to the former Phylis Hayner in 1970. Jack worked as a Salvation Army Officer all over New England and most recently in Herkimer. 

Jack was a life member of the Lee Legion and also belonged to the Marine Corp League in Ilion, several local Rotaries and Kiwanis Clubs. He was a lover of all animals. Hee was loved by all and was “Uncle Jack” to many.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, Phylis; daughter, Mary Olmstead of Rome; John Olmstead Jr. of Lee Center; grandson, Zanakin Brady; sister, Jean Ogden; a special "adopted" daughter, Samantha Smith; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Elaine McClean; and brothers, Arthur, Donald, and Robert Olmstead. 

The family would like to thank the staff of Rome Health 2 East, especially Amy Tomasik.

Jack’s funeral will be held on Saturday, February 17, at 1 PM, at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, followed by a Celebration of Life from 4 to 6 PM at the Lee Legion. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on from 11 AM to 1 PM prior to the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association and/or the Alzheimer’s Association.
