Obituary of Joan L. Leahy
Joan “Flugie” L. Leahy, age 83, of the Town of Floyd, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2022, at home, with her loving family at her side.
She was born December 1, 1938, in Hempstead, New York, a daughter of the late Philip and Loretta Farrel Jugenheimer, and graduated from Rome Free Academy. Joan was united in marriage to Robert Leahy on April 24, 1960, in Richmond Hill, Queens. She was the Director of the Resource Center of the Syracuse Diocese in Rome and New Hartford. She was a member of St. Peter’s Church and served as a Eucharistic Minister, and a member of the Floyd Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
Joan was a woman of profound faith. She was very active in the Cursillo Movement, church choir and religious education. She served as the Religious Education Director at the former St. Thomas Moore Chapel on Griffiss Air Force Base.
Joan is survived by husband, Robert; two daughter and a son in law, Donna Leahy Ridenour of Chicago, and Coleen and John Firsching of Floyd, a son and daughter in law, Timothy and Sherri Leahy of Warner Robins, GA; two sisters, Barbara Sarina of St. Thomas, L.I., and Elizabeth Kellar of Celebration, FL; a brother, Philip Jugenheimer, Jr, of Boca Raton, FL; grandchildren, Jami Leahy, Kasey Leahy, Mackenzie Ridenour, Nathan LaFluer and fiancée Molly Sumner, Elizabeth Firsching and Siobhan Firsching and a great grandchild, Axel Sumner. She was predeceased by two sisters, Carol Maggiore and Rosemarie Sabatini.
The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff and doctors of St. Joseph’s Hospital and the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care for their compassion and care extended to Joan during her illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11:00 AM, at St. Peter’s Church. Burial will be in Townsend Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on Tuesday from 4 to 7 PM. Masks and social distancing practices are required.
