Elizabeth (Betty) Clancy passed away on June 17, 2019 after a courageous battle with Leukemia. She was born December 24, 1932, the eldest daughter of Floyd and Henrietta Rocker. On April 5, 1958, she married James Clancy, who passed away June 4, 2003.

Betty graduated from Oriskany Central School. She received her BA and MA from State University at Albany. She taught Math at Laurel Street School and Rome Free Academy, retiring in June 1988.

Betty and Jim hosted four different children from New York City through The Fresh Air Fund for 15 years. Betty served as Chairman of the Rome Branch to place children in homes of host families.

Betty was a member of Plum Twigs volunteers at Rome Memorial Hospital (who coordinate fund-raisers to help buy equipment for the hospital). She was recognized for logging over 3,500 volunteer hours. She served as Treasurer of the main Twigs for four years and Treasurer of the Plum Twigs for 26 years.

Betty was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. She served as Directress of the Ruth Altar Guild. She was Chairman of the annual Bazaar and Chairman of the two annual Rummage Sales. She was a member of the Sew-n-Sew group, which made quilts to send to Third World Countries and local groups in need.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Dominic Borrelli. She also leaves grandchildren: Nicole (Tim) Holahan, Peter (Andrea) Borrelli and Tyler Borrelli. She leaves four great-grandchildren: George and Josephine Holahan & Gianna and Dominic Borrelli. She also leaves three sisters: Kathleen Sancomb, Marge Maurer, Mary Doty and one brother: Donald (Karyn) Rocker, several nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Betty leaves a special niece, Karen Rocker. She was predeceased by her husband, James, her parents and her older brother, Floyd Rocker, Jr.

Our family would like to sincerely thank the entire staff at Rome Memorial Hospital along with Dr. Samir Desai, Windy Mitchell and the entire staff of Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare for their compassion, professionalism and outstanding service to their patients and committed care for Betty. We would also like to thank the many family and friends for their kindness in getting Betty to and from appointments, their constant companionship and for delicious meals provided. She loved you all.

Betty’s funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 19th, at 1 PM at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, Rome, NY. Burial will be private.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11 Am to 1 PM prior to the service.

Patti and family,
What a wonderful lady! Thinking back to all the days spent at your house, in the backyard pool, on your patio, and In your playroom building irreplaceable childhood memories. Growing up in a neighborhood the way we did going from house to house knowing that we were well taken care of by all of our friends families has never left me. I remember your fresh air sisters Ana and Yvette as well. I know your mom will be missed by many! So sorry for your loss.

Mrs. Clancy will forever be at the top of my favorite teachers. Math was never my strong point, but Mrs. Clancy was a magnificent teacher who could put it all together. It was in her math class at Laurel that I learned to balance a checkbook! Being the dedicated and kind person that she was, she even helped me with a sewing project after school--making a corduroy jumper for a younger sibling when I had very limited sewing skills! She was one in a million and I will never forget her!
